What is a Heat Pump?
A heat pump is an energy efficient system for heating and cooling your home or business. It consists of an exterior heating and cooling system that is connected to an interior mini-split unit. There are hybrid systems that operate using a combination of oil and electricity and fully electric systems which can be connected to the grid or a solar panel system. Heat pumps offer a personalized and fully customizable heating and cooling solution to keep you comfortable year round.
Although heat pumps have been around since the 1970s, they are gaining popularity as Americans seek greener methods of heating and cooling their homes and businesses. With Efficiency Maine offering impressive incentives and rebates to help you make the switch from fossil fuels to more sustainable HVAC systems, the demand for heat pump installations is growing.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
For heating, our heat pumps harness warmth from the external air, channeling it inside through a specialized refrigerant. Once inside, the refrigerant gets compressed, amplifying its temperature considerably before it reaches the indoor coil. A fan then circulates air over this heated coil, radiating warmth throughout your space. This innovative heating technique is a cleaner alternative than burning fossil fuels and ensures zero emissions – a green choice for our planet.
For cooling, the mechanism flips. The indoor unit captures the room's warmth, directing it to the external compressor. The warmth is condensed into a chilled liquid which circles back to the indoor coil. A fan breezes over this chilled coil, dispersing cool air throughout the room.
Each room or space you want heated or cooled has an indoor unit that you can control individually versus a traditional, all spaces or none, HVAC system, conserving energy and saving you money.
Heat Pumps: THE MOST EFFICIENT HEATING & COOLING SYSTEM
When it comes to eco-friendly and energy efficiency, heat pumps are superior to traditional HVAC systems for a number of reasons.
- You have complete control over the degree of heating and cooling every space in your home receives.
- You can turn off units in unoccupied rooms, set timers, schedules, and individual temperatures.
- Electric heat pumps eliminate our need for fossil fuel heating and have zero emissions.
- Heat pumps continually circulate and filter the air for a cleaner, healthier heating and cooling alternative.
- Without ducts, heat pumps offer superior energy efficiency (no heat loss) and easy installation.
MITSUBISHI Heat Pumps
At Johnson & Hayes Heat Pumps, quality and performance is priority which is why we recommend Mitsubishi heat pumps to our residential and commercial customers in Southern Maine.
Mitsubishi offers the best warranties and highest quality heating and cooling systems designed for the extreme temperatures we experience.
As a cutting edge manufacturer, Mitsubishi has air, water, and geo-thermal or ground-sourced heat pumps to suit your needs and future energy goals. Air-sourced systems can connect to your existing HVAC ductwork or operate ductless.
Our HVAC specialists learn your needs and help you choose the best heat pump system for your Portland area home or business while considering your investment expectations.
SAMSUNG Heat Pumps
Samsung heat pump products are of exceptional quality. While they offer state-of-the-art sustainable heating and cooling solutions on par with Mitsubishi, they also have budget-friendly, less intrusive options to make the transition from fossil fuel to green energy affordable.
Samsung's Hylex™ heat pump allows for a simple transition from traditional oil-reliant HVAC systems to clean, green heating and cooling. We merely replace your existing HVAC system with a Hylex™ heat pump and connect it to your existing duct work. We don't need to install new wiring or piping.
Our heat pump installation experts can help you decide what product is best for you.
OTHER Heat Pump BRANDS We Install, Maintain & Repair

Heat Pump Maintenance Tips
CLEAN YOUR FILTERS
To keep your indoor units functioning well, check and clean the filters monthly, during seasons they operate at their maximum. In the shoulder seasons, check the filters monthly and clean as needed. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasives when cleaning the filters on your indoor heat pump units.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully to prevent damage or risking your warranty.
ANNUAL FALL CLEANING
To ensure your heat pump system can provide you with the warmth and comfort you need during the cold Maine winter, have your heat pump system inspected, cleaned, and serviced every fall.
We also recommend having one of our heat pump technicians inspect your outdoor and indoor units in the spring to ensure optimal cooling to keep you comfortable in the Portland summers. For your safety and the performance of your system, we do not advise cleaning your outdoor unit yourself. Without the proper equipment and training, you risk damaging your heat pump, resulting in costly repair or replacement.
Annual fall cleaning and regular maintenance is included when you have Johnson & Hayes install your heat pump heating and cooling system.
